Michał from Tamenuri Studio is an avid fan of jazz music. One of his favourites is the legendary recording from 1959, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. It was a milestone in the history of jazz and is considered to be the birth of Cool Jazz.
Michał has made a series of urushi pens called Kind of Blue and he named each pen after a song from the album.
Since Kind of Blue is one of my all time favourites and Michał’s creations are truly beatiful, I was especially interested to see how the pens will turn out to be.
Most of the pens in the series are blue in colour which is understandable. They use different kind of techniques.
From left to right they are:
- Kind of Blue I (blue on blue negoro-nuri with some opal particles)
- Kind of Blue II: Freddie Freeloader (3 shades of blue and lots of opal particles in different sizes)
- Kind of Blue III: So What
My Tamenuri Studio Blue Waves is somewhat similar to So What. Though Blue Waves is gorgeous now I was a bit jealous because mine didn’t have such a cool name (pun intended). But then came the the forth pen in the series, Blue in Green which was both beautiful and different from my other Tamenuri Studio pen (or any other pens of mine for that matter).
Kind of Blue IV: Blue in Green. Blue base colour, silver leaf, and blue/green overlayer. Top coat lacquer is dyed blue, but always cures in more greenish hue. In time it will get more blue, especialy near corners and edges (tamenuri) , so I left threads blue.

Obviously I had to have this 🤩 though it was quite an investment even with the generous discount I got from Michał 🙏
