You may live with someone for 17 years and still find out new things about them.
Being a pen addict, it comes naturally that I gifted several fountain pens to every member of our little household. I knew that my wife likes ultra extra fine pens the most so I got her a beautiful Pelikan Souverän M400 Tortoiseshell-White with an extra fine nib. The pen then travelled to Los Angeles where the legendary Mike Masuyama grinded the extra fine nib to a needlepoint. My wife was happy with the nib though the pen was a bit too shiny for her.
As her fountain pen preferences unfolded over the years, she found the M400 less appealing. First of all she dislikes accents, especially gilded ones. Second of all she doesn’t like “big” nibs (if you can call this M400 nib as such). She came to like hooded nibs more. Though it saddens me to part with such a pretty pen, we have decided to sell the Pelikan.
A friend of mine was so kind as to lend me her Pilot Vanishing Point so that my wife could try it out. She liked it and choose a nice Decimo in place of the more luxurious Souverän. So it’s “new pen day” today and she is absolutely delighted with her new pen and its smooth nib. She is happy + we have a new pen so that makes me double happy too.
